Referee Training Course Information

All courses offered for both coaches and referees can be found and registered for on the AYSOU website at any time, even if none are currently listed below

Instructions to register for an AYSO training course

 1. First you must register as a volunteer - go to the website for your home region (you're here now if you live in Ossining, which is Region 201) and start the process by clicking the "Register Now" button in the top right corner of this window.  Even returning volunteers have to re-register this way, but as long as your primary email and contact info hasn't changed, when complete it should pull in all of your certifications and even your AYSO volunteer ID from the old eAYSO system.  Youth volunteers must be registered under a parent or guardian's account, even if that parent is not a volunteer themselves.  For step-by-step instructions on registering as a volunteer, click here .

 2. After completing your volunteer registration, to sign up for in-person or online training use the new AYSOU learning management system as follows:

  • Once you have registered as a volunteer, click here to login to AYSOU directly (it should pull in your login credentials so you don't have to type them), otherwise, just go to and log in (with your AYSO ID/user name and password).
  • Click on "In-Person Courses" along the top red menu bar (or click here if you are already logged in to AYSOU)
  • Click on the "Open" button next to "Referee Instructor Led Courses" and scroll down until you find the course you are looking for - new referees should register for the "Regional Referee Online Companion Course"
  • Click the "Sessions" button next to the course name and then click the "Register" button next to the session date and location you want to register for.

Make sure you select the right date and course location you are looking for! Pay attention to the course location and start time

    • Regional Referee candidates should be at least 12 years old or turning 12 this season or calendar year (you can still be an 8U Official if you are at least 10 years old or turning 10 this year).
    • ALL candidates MUST COMPLETE the following online courses BEFORE attending the classroom session!!! (bring proof of completion to class - print out or screen-shot certificate of completion at end)
      1. Safe Haven - click here, (or click on “Online Courses” from the main AYSOU page) and select “AYSO’s Safe Haven”
      2. Concussion Awareness - click here, (or click on “Online Courses” from the main AYSOU page) and select “CDC: Concussion Course”
      3. Laws of the Game - click here, (or click on “Online Courses” from the main AYSOU page) and select “AYSO’s Summary of the Laws of the Game”
      4. Regional Referee Online - click here, (or click on “Online Courses” from the main AYSOU page) and select “Regional Referee Training”

If you need help, click on "Resources" along the top red menu bar (or click here), and then Open the "How-Tos for Volunteers" tutorial on How to Register for a live Course Session.

Remember, you can check the AYSOU website at any time for details on courses offered in the Westchester area and beyond!

How to become a referee

Referees and Referee recruits
  • Not certified yet: Sign up for either the full day "Basic Referee" course or the half day "Basic Referee Online Companion" course.  If you are at least 10 years old, you can take the "U-8 Official" course to become certified to referee U-8 matches.  All other Basic Referee courses require you to be at least 12 years old, or turning 12 this calendar year.
  • U-8 officials wanting to upgrade to Basic/Regional status: Sign up for the half day "Basic Referee Online Companion" course
  • Current Basic (Regional) Referees: We strongly encourage you to sign up for the "Intermediate Referee"course to upgrade your credentials, affording you the opportunity to referee games at any level, including upper levels U14 & U16. Additionally, once you are certified as an Intermediate referee, you can choose to cross-certify as a Grade 8 USSF referee, allowing you to referee "club" level matches if you wish (WYSL for example).

For any questions regarding joining the Ossining AYSO referee program or the training and certification process, or if you have issues with any of the above steps, please feel free to contact our Referee Administrator, at [email protected]
